A couple months ago one of my favorite persons on the planet came through Austin to play a gig at the famed La Zona Rosa in Austin, TX. Andy Davis, whose Latest album is now available (currently #4 on the charts) at Barnes and Noble, is not only one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet, but perhaps one of the most talented musicians around. He plays pretty much every instrument and he writes the catchiest most heart-felt music I've heard in quite some time....

Andy Davis, whose Latest album is now available (and #4 on the charts) at Barnes and Noble, is not only one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet, but perhaps one of the most talented musicians around. He plays pretty much every instrument and he writes the catchiest most heart-felt music I've heard in quite some time.
Fact is, large crowds are responding. That's how he landed the gig with Barnes and Noble.
Obviously, I'm quite proud to call the guy a friend. I HIGHLY recommend you check out his music. I know you'll like it.
I have used his music in all of my "behind the scenes" videos. (In case you were wondering who writes and sings those cool tunes...It's Andy Davis.
)
The last couple of times that his tours has taken him through Austin we get together beforehand to snap a few promo shots. This time I recruited a friend of mine to man the video camera, so that I could bring you this video.
My set up is very simple as to be mobile. In true strobist fashion I'm traveling very lightly.
I have a Canon 430EX Speedlight mounted on a simple 7ft. stand with a very inexpensive shoot-through umbrella on it.
I am firing the Speedlight using the ST-E2 Transmitter.
There was quite a bit of ambient light around, so I adjusted for that in several cases.
Since I don't carry around a light meter
one little trick I do, and maybe you do this already, is I'll set my camera to fully automatic and take one shot on full auto. I let the camera decide everything. I even set the Speedlight to full E-TTL and the ST takes care of that as well.
After just 1 or 2 shots on full auto I can look at what the camera "thinks" are the right settings for the environment. I look at the picture it produced, of course I usually find it boring, but that's the point. Now I have a reference. I flip it back to M (manual) and I make my own adjustments to the settings. I then snap a couple more test shots and I'm usually ready to rock and roll.
I hope you enjoy the video(s) - I've included my music video of the photo shoot and as a bonus I've included the barnes and noble commercial featuring the Andy Davis.
Enjoy!
